New technology tools

Technology tools integrated into planning and instruction help students interact with content in ways a book cannot. In this Grade 5 interdisciplinary American Revolution unit, digital experiences are used to build background knowledge, strengthen geographic thinking, and keep learning anchored to clear objectives through discussion, source analysis, questioning, and reflection.

ClassVR (classvr.com) supports immersive background building for the American Revolution unit by helping students visualize colonial communities, Boston, Lexington, and Concord before they analyze events and perspectives. The tool is most effective when paired with purposeful teacher moves that connect what students see to discussion, source analysis, questioning, and written reflection.

Google Earth (google.com/earth/education) strengthens the geography component of the unit by helping students examine locations, distances, and how geography influenced key events during the American Revolution. It gives learners a clearer spatial understanding of place while supporting evidence-based conversation and deeper historical thinking.

New Technology Tools

Tools I integrate into planning and instruction to help students interact with content in ways a book cannot, while staying anchored to clear learning goals.

ClassVR

Purpose: ClassVR is an immersive virtual and augmented reality platform designed for education, combining VR headsets, curriculum-aligned content, and teacher controls.

I would use ClassVR during my Grade 5 interdisciplinary American Revolution unit to help students build background knowledge and visualize colonial communities, historical locations, and battlefields connected to Boston, Lexington, and Concord.

After the VR experience, students would connect their observations to readings and primary and secondary sources as they consider whether the colonists were justified in going to war with Great Britain.

ClassVR supports instruction by giving students another way to access difficult content. Some students can picture colonial Boston from a text description, while others need to see an environment before the information begins to make sense.

I have used ClassVR with students before, so I know the technology cannot become the objective. It must be intentionally paired with discussion, source analysis, questioning, and reflection so the immersive experience strengthens learning rather than distracting from it.

VR expands beyond pencil-and-paper instruction because it gives students access to experiences that would otherwise be unavailable. Rather than simply completing the same task digitally, students gain context that photographs and textbook descriptions cannot fully reproduce.

Google Earth

Purpose: Google Earth is a geographic exploration tool that helps students examine real locations, spatial relationships, maps, and geographic features.

Google Earth would support the geography component of the American Revolution unit by helping students locate Boston, Lexington, Concord, Philadelphia, and other significant places while considering how geography influenced communication, transportation, military decisions, and colonial experiences.

Instead of memorizing names on a map, students can zoom in and out, compare locations, estimate distances, and make connections between where events occurred and why those locations mattered.

This creates opportunities to connect social studies, geography, mathematics, and literacy. Students can use evidence from texts to explain how geography affected events and why movement and communication worked differently in the eighteenth century.

Google Earth expands beyond a printed map because students actively investigate geographic relationships rather than viewing a fixed image. Together, Google Earth and ClassVR create a purposeful sequence that builds context, inquiry, and deeper understanding.
